Data Centre Opens

Bloxham Mill is nearing completion of the construction of its state-of-the art Data Centre for its IT and Telecoms business, bm-it. bm-it aims to provide high-quality, low-cost colocation and rack space to businesses in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire, the West Midlands, Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire.

Colin Deamer, Director of bm-it told us: “Demand for data centres is accelerating due to rapid and continued growth of e-business. Bloxham Mill is home to over 47 businesses which range from recruitment companies to an international gaming design company. They all have one thing in common: a need to ensure their database and computer records are kept in a completely safe and secure environment. Our decision to extend our collocation and rack space services to the wider business community has been received very positively.”

The Bloxham Mill Data Centre will house customer servers from a variety of business types, up to it's capacity of 1222 units, of server space.

Nearly a quarter of a million pounds has been invested in the construction of the Data Centre and features include:

  • 7 independent bespoke air conditioning systems for resilient air cooling and handling
  • FM200 gas fire suppression with intelligent learning capability
  • Gigabit fibre backbone with Dual redundant Cisco switches to each rack
  • Business continuity suite for unplanned emergencies
  • High capacity backup diesel generator
  • On site IT team
  • IP Bandwidth, leaseline, private circuits available from 512k to multi-gigabit on fibre provision.

Colin continued: “After its employees, a business’s data is probably its most valuable asset, yet many businesses have no data protection in place whatsoever, let alone a disaster recovery plan.”

We are confident that the Centre will attract significant interest when it opens at the beginning of August and we will be hosting a number of Open Days and informative business forums to allow business professionals to see the services at first hand, and to discuss their individual requirements with our team. For those businesses that have disaster plans in place, we are offering the facility to actually test this by utilising the Business Continuity Suite at Bloxham Mill.

In this edition, we are delighted to profile Sarah Castle, the MD of Think Big Training, an award-winning training company that understands that sales are the life blood of any business.

Main Operation
Putting it simply, Think Big specialises in developing people to be the very best they can be within their roles at work. If staff are equipped with the correct skills and knowledge, profitable business will follow. All businesses train their staff in one way, shape or form. Think Big delivers specialist courses ranging from one-to-one management training to motivate and inspire teams, to success and excellence in customer service courses, which every person within the organisation can attend. We work with companies such as Sanderson, Dunlop, TNT Express and Brethertons Solicitors.

Business Highlight
In 2004 I was awarded Sales Trainer of The Year at the National Sales Awards. I was delighted to receive the award which recognised my positive can do attitude and methodology used when developing people and designing courses as well as the results achieved.

Total Staff
One perfectly formed employee - me! I personally oversee every project from the initial meeting, design of the course and I deliver it. The buck stops with me and that is the way I like it. Wherever possible, I try to outsource administration services to skilled professionals, be it the telephone reception services at Bloxham Mill, my accounts or the specialist services of the PDQ Partnership, a Marketing and PR company. I enjoy the flexibility that outsourcing gives me in my business and it helps the bottom line too!

Best Business Decision
Change the way courses are delivered. Gone are the three day back-to-back courses where delegates arrive fresh and eager to learn, but by day three are suffering from information overload. All Think Big concept courses are delivered in small workshops which last no longer than four hours at a time. The delegates respond really well to this because they learn a little and implement a lot.

Worst Business Decision
Out sourcing work to other trainers! My clients didn’t like it. I’ve listened to my clients over the years and they tell me that the reason they use Think Big is because of the way I deliver the courses that I have designed. It is impossible for other trainers, no matter how good they are, to replicate someone else’s style; it can’t be done. Think Big’s strategy is, and always will be, to offer our clients a bespoke personal service.

Best Bit of Advice
Attitude is everything... never stop believing in yourself.

Different Job
Sell coconuts of the beach in Fiji . I believe such a job would soon develop into the best run sales operation in the whole of the Pacific region (see above - you have just got to Think Big!).

Young Dragons visit Bloxham Mill

Regional Young Enterprise winners Roxsolid from the North Oxfordshire Academy visited Bloxham Mill as part of the Academy’s drive to forge links with the local business community and to ensure that students are made aware of what business is like in the real world.

As part of the Young Enterprise competition, Roxsolid sourced and distributed a novel wrist band data storage device. The group of sixth formers were announced as the Regional winners of the North Oxfordshire Young Enterprise Competition, beating other schools including Bloxham School, Chipping Norton School and the Warriner School.

The North Oxfordshire Academy is a new school which specialises in media and communication with business enterprise. Judging by the performance of Roxsolid, who were a delightful group of young people, the Academy is well on its way to a successful future.
